"Slime In The Ice Machine"

Homestead Market's Restaurant Report Card

No, it doesn't say anything about slime in their ice machine. I'll explain that later.

Homestead Market says that it:
. . .seeks to provide customers with the finest locally sourced, natural and organic foods. Many of its products are from local and family operated gardens, farms and orchards in central Texas.
The Butcher shop features a quality selection of locally raised grass-fed and all natural beef and lamb, authentically pastured chickens and eggs and high quality fish.
Also available are delicious artisan baked goods, organic milk, butter and cream, cleaning supplies and more. (Source)
One has to wonder if they are actually putting those cleaning supplies to use.

It seems that, along with that grass-fed and natural beef, Homestead Market serves up a side of flies. (No, I didn't misspell fries.)  According to KWTX:

Homestead Market in Waco got a 76 on their most recent inspection. The inspector said the meat cutting room had flies and dirty equipment deeming the work table contaminated. Based on everything, the inspector said safe food handling knowledge was not being demonstrated.

Here's the Inspection Report and Reinspection report from the Waco-McLennan County Heath District.

This list shows how Homestead's score compares to other local establishments. The inspection date I'm referencing was 11-24-2015. They passed their reinspection on 12-1-2015.

About that slime in the ice machine. The phrase was immortalized by the late Marvin Zindler, a reporter for Houston's  KTRK-TV, who gave his Rat and Roach Report on the city's Food Inspection Program restaurant reports.

Maybe the song will take your mind off of the flies at Homestead Market, or maybe not.

Update: It should come as no surprise that someone fell sick with food poisoning after eating at a Homestead Heritage establishment.
i think i ate something bad at homestead heritage got home and wow sisck for 20 hrs

  1. Did this have anything to do with why they closed down early for rain on Black Friday/Sat after Thanksgiving? I know it was rainy, but they claimed to have had 25K in 2015. I saw in the paper they said they'd had 1K and 1.5k Fri & Sat before they decided to cancel and have it another weekend. We did go out, and I thought it was strange the restaurant was closed with all the expected tourists. This was late Friday, and it looked like no one was parking in the fields. We parked in front of the barn. We won't be returning.

    1. I don't know if this is why they closed early on Fri/Sat. They certainly weren't too swamped with Fair visitors to man the grocery store.

The restaurant is a separate business from the grocery store which this article is about.
